God stood out in the roadway stopping the neighbours’ cars. The girl watched her through the front window. She called to the boy, who was in the bathroom washing his face. ‘What?’ the boy called. He towelled his face and went out to see what the girl wanted. When he saw what was going on outside, he opened the window. ‘Hey,’ he called. God turned. ‘What are you doing?’ God held her hand above her eyes to block out the sun. ‘I need to get to the mall,’ she said. The boy swore. ‘I can drive you,’ he called. ‘You need to stop bothering the neighbours.’ ‘They don’t mind,’ said God, ‘but if you have time to drive me, that would be great.’ She trotted up the driveway, closer to the window. ‘Could you maybe lend me some money as well?’ she asked, keeping her voice low.
